A sealing boot is a protective rubber or polymer component that provides environmental sealing and mechanical protection for high-voltage cable terminations.
A sealing boot is a critical elastomeric component used in high-voltage insulated cable terminations to create a watertight, dustproof, and corrosion-resistant seal between the cable insulation and the termination housing. It prevents moisture ingress, contamination, and electrical tracking that could cause insulation failure or flashover in electrical distribution systems operating at voltages typically above 1kV.

EPDM boots offer excellent weather resistance and moderate temperature range (-50°C to +90°C) at lower cost. Silicone boots provide superior high-temperature performance (-60°C to +200°C) and better dielectric properties but are more expensive. EPDM is preferred for outdoor applications, while silicone is used in high-temperature environments.
Visual inspections should be conducted annually, with detailed inspections including dielectric testing every 3-5 years. Immediate inspection is required after extreme weather events, physical damage observations, or system faults near the termination.
Generally not recommended. The compression set and material memory degradation reduce sealing effectiveness. Always use new boots during maintenance or re-termination to ensure reliable sealing performance.
