Where does laser welding beat MIG or TIG?

Thin-to-medium sheet, visible cosmetic seams, heat-sensitive assemblies, and high-volume automated joints. Speed is typically several times arc welding with far less distortion and finishing. Heavy single-pass thick plate and poor fit-up still favor arc or hybrid processes.

What fit-up does laser welding require?

Classic keyhole welding wants gaps under about 10 percent of material thickness. Wobble heads and filler-wire feeding relax this substantially, which is why modern handheld and robotic systems handle real-world fabrication tolerances.

What safety infrastructure is mandatory?

Class 1 enclosure or controlled Class 4 area with interlocked barriers, certified laser safety glass, fume extraction, and trained operators per IEC 60825. Handheld welders demand particular discipline because the beam path is operator-directed.
