AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) detects dangerous electrical arcs that can cause fires, while GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) detects ground faults that can cause electric shocks. This combined circuit provides both types of protection in one unit.
The circuit uses copper conductors for optimal conductivity, ferromagnetic cores for efficient current sensing, semiconductor sensors like Hall-effect sensors for precise fault detection, and polymer/thermoset plastic housing for electrical insulation and mechanical durability.
When the signal processor detects an arc fault or ground fault through the current sensor, it triggers the trip mechanism which physically interrupts the electrical circuit within milliseconds, cutting off power to prevent fire or shock hazards.
