Guard rails are structural safety components designed to provide fall protection on elevated walkways, platforms, and mezzanines in industrial settings. They consist of vertical posts (stanchions), horizontal rails (typically top, mid, and toe rails), and often include kick plates or mesh infill. These systems create physical barriers that prevent workers, equipment, or materials from falling off edges while allowing safe access and movement. They are engineered to withstand specific load requirements and impact forces according to occupational safety standards.

Guard rails function as passive fall protection systems through physical obstruction and structural resistance. The vertical posts transfer impact loads to the supporting structure (platform or floor), while horizontal rails create continuous barriers that deflect or stop falling objects or personnel. The system's strength comes from proper material selection, connection methods (welding or bolting), and geometric design that meets deflection and load-bearing requirements. Toe rails prevent objects from rolling under the barrier, and kick plates contain smaller debris.
