Optional pre-filter component for activated carbon filtration systems that captures larger particles to extend main filter lifespan.
A pre-filter is an optional filtration component installed upstream of an activated carbon filter in industrial systems. It functions as a preliminary barrier to remove larger particulate matter, sediment, rust, scale, and other coarse contaminants from fluid streams (typically air or water). By capturing these larger particles before they reach the activated carbon media, the pre-filter prevents premature clogging, reduces pressure drop across the system, and significantly extends the operational life and efficiency of the primary activated carbon filter. This component is particularly valuable in applications with high particulate loads or where maintaining consistent flow rates is critical.

A pre-filter is recommended when the inlet fluid contains visible sediment, rust particles, sand, or other coarse contaminants exceeding 25 microns, when flow rates are high (>30 GPM), or when extending activated carbon change intervals is economically beneficial.
Replacement frequency depends on contaminant load. Monitor differential pressure across the filter; replace when pressure drop increases by 5-15 psi over clean state. Typical intervals range from 1-6 months in continuous operation.
Some types (like stainless steel mesh filters) can be backwashed or manually cleaned, but most disposable media filters (polypropylene, pleated cartridges) are designed for single use and must be replaced.
