Grade 8.8 fasteners have a minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa and yield strength of 640 MPa, while Grade 10.9 offers 1000 MPa tensile and 900 MPa yield strength. Grade 10.9 provides approximately 25% higher load capacity but requires more precise torque control and has lower corrosion resistance unless specially coated.
Use locking methods such as nylon-insert lock nuts, prevailing torque nuts, thread-locking adhesives (Loctite), double-nut systems, or mechanical locking washers. Proper preload torque and regular maintenance inspections are also critical for vibration-prone applications.
Consider maximum tensile and shear loads, safety factors (typically 2-4 for dynamic applications), material compatibility, corrosion environment, required disassembly frequency, space constraints, and cost. Engineering calculations should verify shear strength, thread engagement length, and clamp load adequacy.
