The indexing detent operates on a positive mechanical engagement principle. When the pattern selector ring rotates, the detent mechanism (often spring-loaded) rides over the ring's surface until it aligns with a recessed notch or groove. At this point, the detent drops into position, creating a secure lock that prevents rotation until sufficient force is applied to overcome the spring tension or mechanical resistance.
