Tube sheets function by providing a rigid mounting surface where tubes are inserted through precisely drilled holes and secured via rolling, welding, or mechanical expansion. They create separate compartments for different fluid streams while transferring thermal energy through the tube walls. The tube sheet's thickness and material properties distribute mechanical loads, prevent tube vibration, and maintain pressure boundaries between the shell side and tube side of the heat exchanger.
