A guide rail, also known as a way, is a precision-engineered linear motion component that provides a rigid, low-friction path for moving parts in machinery. It ensures accurate linear movement with minimal deviation, supporting loads while maintaining alignment in applications requiring high precision and repeatability. In air bearing and linear guide systems, it typically interfaces with carriages or sliders equipped with rolling elements (like balls or rollers) or air bearings to achieve near-frictionless motion.

Guide rails work by providing a hardened, ground track along which a carriage or slider moves. In linear guide systems, the carriage contains recirculating rolling elements (balls or rollers) that roll along the rail's raceways, reducing friction and enabling smooth linear motion. In air bearing systems, the rail may have a flat or specially profiled surface where an air film is generated by pressurized air from the bearing, creating a frictionless interface. The rail's geometry (e.g., rectangular, round, or profiled) and precision grinding ensure straightness, flatness, and load capacity.
