A shim stack is an assembly of multiple thin, precisely manufactured shims (typically metallic discs or washers) stacked together within a valve body. It functions as a critical flow-control element in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, where the collective thickness, number, arrangement, and orifice patterns of the shims determine the valve's pressure-flow characteristics, response time, and damping behavior. The stack is often compressed between valve plates or seats and can be customized by adding or removing shims to tune system performance.
