Circular retaining devices that secure components on shafts or in housings by fitting into grooves.
Retaining rings, also known as circlips or snap rings, are precision-engineered fastening components designed to be installed into machined grooves on shafts or within housings/bores. They function as shoulder-like obstructions that prevent axial movement of mounted components such as bearings, gears, and spacers. Available in internal (housing) and external (shaft) configurations, they provide reliable axial positioning without requiring threaded fasteners or complex assemblies.

Internal rings fit into housings/bores to retain components from the outside, while external rings fit onto shafts to retain components from the inside. They require different groove geometries and installation tools.
Match the ring to the groove dimensions (diameter, width, depth) and calculate required axial load capacity. Consider assembly/disassembly frequency, environmental conditions, and industry standards.
Generally not recommended due to plastic deformation and fatigue. Reuse may compromise retention force and lead to premature failure, especially in high-load applications.
